Hensel Phelps was awarded a design-bid-build contract with the Smithsonian Institution for the General Services Building Lateral Strengthening & Fire Protection at the National Zoological Park (NZP). The project includes construction of a retaining wall parallel to the North Road and structural elements to resist existing lateral forces. The project will update life safety and accessibility elements within the General Services Building and organize the existing workshops and supply areas to enhance NZP support operations. Construction will be phased to minimize staff relocations. This is Hensel Phelps’ sixth contract with the Smithsonian Institution and the second contract at the National Zoo.
