At Tampa International Airport (TPA), we are not only expanding their world-class facilities, but we are also doing so with an unwavering commitment to sustainability, demonstrating how responsible development can go hand in hand with progress. As construction on the new Airside D continues, we are setting a new standard by recycling 100% of the concrete from the former airside.
This initiative involves repurposing approximately 70,000 tons—or 450,000 SF of concrete apron—which is the equivalent of roughly 127,000 manatees! Instead of heading to a landfill, this material is being crushed on-site and meticulously reused for the new Airside D’s foundations, as well as being stockpiled for future airport projects. This circular approach significantly reduces waste and minimizes the environmental footprint of the massive undertaking.
The concrete work is a vital component of a larger, roughly $90 million contract, which also encompasses essential security fencing and utility infrastructure. Once completed, the new Airside D will span 600,000 SF, making it the largest airside at Tampa International Airport. This expansion is crucial for accommodating TPA’s continued growth and enhancing the passenger experience for millions of travelers each year.
