About the Project
Hensel Phelps served as the Construction Manager at Risk for Southwest Airlines on a multi-phase development at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, focused on expanding and modernizing aircraft maintenance operations. The project began with constructing a 146,000 SF parking lot, complete with pedestrian turnstile gates and CCTV surveillance for enhanced security. Subsequent phases included extensive airfield concrete paving and the development of a 34,000-square-foot Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and Provisioning building.
After a temporary pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work resumed with the demolition of two existing structures. The next phase involved relocating a key airport arterial road and constructing a 93,000 SF pre-engineered metal building to serve as the new aircraft maintenance hangar. This state-of-the-art hangar is designed to accommodate up to three Boeing 737-10 series aircraft. It features advanced systems such as a vertical lift fabric door, pop-up utility pits, and a high-expansion foam fire suppression system.
